The sho, which stands for super high output, delivers enough power and cornering poise to leave pricier audi and lexus models coughing in the dust. dramatically different and advanced in comparison with the mildly pleasing previous version, the 2010 taurus models offer brisk performance, precise and reassuring handling, lavish comfort, and a comprehensive occupant-safety package. The taurus and taurus sho are the flagships of ford's entire line. And since, at long last, sedans are once again outselling trucks nationally, ford has every reason to be optimistic about the taurus's role in ford's future. we found the taurus to be a responsive, comfortable, and protective family sedan, whether in se, sel or limited trim. All-wheel drive is available. walkaroundthe new taurus is a thoroughly american design, yet it owes almost nothing to the long, ponderous line of over-styled american sedans of the past. Its styling is exciting and chic, more than a match for any foreign competitors in its price class or even for competitors that cost a good deal more. Even in its most mundane models, it has an aggressive, ready-to-go demeanor. the signature three-bar grille on the taurus wraps around to sleek, swept-back headlamp complexes. The expression on this car's face is a wry glint that says, this car knows what it's doing. the side panels are muscular and handsomely sculpted, while the side profile shows a distant similarity to the currently fashionable audi family. The only peculiarity is the odd bullet-head of chrome on the front fender sides just ahead of the front-door cut. Isolated where it is, it's a tic that ford styling could do without. at the rear, the car's lines feature another pair of sleek lamp complexes, tied together with a gleaming horizontal chrome strip. In the limited and sho versions, big 19-inch wheels and tires give the taurus a resolutely competitive look. a key element of the sho formula is the subtlety of its unique exterior design cues. The sho is distinguished from other taurus models by special wheels, decklid spoiler, twin exhaust tips, unique grille work and unique parking lamp bezels. interiorinside, the new ford taurus is roomy, comfortable, and quiet. The dashboard takes an unusual form. Its upper surface is a broad, downward-curving shape that behaves almost like a sunshade over the dash's cascade of equipment and gauges. The gauges have a fresh, modern look, and all instrument lights are fully lit at all times. This is important, because so many cars dim their instruments in daylight, enough so that in high sun, the gauges and readouts are unreadable. For this bright decision, give ford an a-plus. the taurus paddle shifters are based on the bmw paradigm, with shifters on both sides of the wheel, a pull of the forefinger granting an upshift and a push of the thumb yielding a downshift. The six-speed transmission, present in all models, works remarkably well, especially in the sho, which is spec-ed to provide still-faster gear changes than the normal taurus. However, this writer prefers the ferrari paradigm, where the paddle on one side of the wheel summons an upshift, and downshifts are summoned at the opposite side of the wheel. This is simpler and more intuitive. This full range of technologies is offered in no other family sedan within the taurus price range. the seats are lavishly comfortable, with one exception: in order to achieve its full five-star rating in crash protection, which it successfully did, the front seat headres. All the pickup basics and a harley-davidson edition to boot. introductionquieter and more carlike than ever, the ford f-150 continues to be the light-duty pickup truck by which all others are measured. The world's best-selling truck continues to evolve into a sedan with a handy bed attached. all 2003 models get a new noise control package, 75 improvements in all, according to ford, for a 10-percent quieter ride. Audio system choices now include a cassette/cd player and an in-dash six-cd changer. All 2003 f-150s now have the latch (lower anchors and tethers for children) systems as standard equipment. a new heritage edition f-150 commemorates 100 years of ford motor company history. An f-150 stx edition is newly available on regular cab and supercab xl and xlt. King ranch models get chrome tubular running boards, a six-disc in-dash cd changer and woodgrain bezels. . lineupthere is something for everybody at ford's f-150 store; they've made sure of that. Three engines are available: standard engine for the base xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that makes 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and xlt, standard in all others. No light-duty diesel engine is available for f-150 models. The three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can also be had as king ranch models, with leather captain's chairs, a premium audio system, and unique badging. supercrew features rear seats that can quickly be converted into covered cargo space. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5-1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup into tight urban or country spaces. Special svt wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited-production street rod is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch short wheelbase. also available for 2003 is a new ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine with 345 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. It's available in black or optional two-tone paint, black over silver with a high cutline and orange details. Body-color bumpers, a new front end with fog lamps, a chrome grille and chrome tie-down hooks, and clear-lens headlamps are standard, as are 20x9-inch chromed aluminum wheels with the harley logo. The h-d pickup is lowered one inch, with a dual inlet-dual outlet muffler that ends in chrome 3 1? 2-inch slash-cut exhaust tips. A special 100th anniversary nameplate commemorates the centennial of ford and harley next year. . walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It's rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. In two years, the whole f-150 design will change to something far more radical and big-truck-like, putting an end to the aero truck phase at ford design, but for now, the f-150 is still a looker, loaded with features. the f-150's aerodynamic hood drops away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck, handy for maneuvering off-road, for parking, and when navigating in the city. Its fenders seem to make small rural roads smaller. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck. . interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's passenger cars. The designers simply adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for such a big vehicle. the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort. all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice, comfortable place to change into and out of almost any kind of recreational gear. And the f-150 aftermarket is a billion-dollar business. It's a great place to put cargo or pets. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. Good, solid brakes, but not impressive in terms of sheer power. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot–pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge, most of which are larger in displacement. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little anemic for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. Like its corporate sibling, the ford escape, the mariner has been thoroughly updated for 2008. improvements to the 2008 mercury mariner cover the spectrum, adding both safety features and refinement without altering the basic character that has made this small suv a popular choice across the united states. mariner has a bit more truck-style flair than some of its competitors. The new look for 2008 replicates mercury's mid-size, truck-based mountaineer sport-utility. Mariner's ride height and seating position, for example, are higher than that of the honda cr-v or nissan rogue. Mariner can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most vehicles in the class. still, mariner delivers the advantages of other unit-body, car-based suvs such as the cr-v. The mariner is more car-like on the road than the jeep liberty, for example. Folding the rear seats opens a good-sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of the typical sedan. Interior storage options have improved for 2008. The finish is more upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best. New standard safety features, including a roll stability control system, reset the class benchmark. the engines are one of the few things carried over from the previous mariner. Along with the ford escape, it's the only full hybrid available in the class. Like other mariners, the gas-electric hybrid is offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. Unlike some mild hybrid suvs, the mariner hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph. in line with a plan to rejuvenate the mercury brand, mariner is intended to offer a step up in status over the escape. Yet it's worth noting that the escape can be equipped identically to the mariner, and with the same stuff the prices are essentially the same. In either case, a leather-upholstered v6 4wd, with premium audio, navigation, dual-zone climate control and rear sonar sells for about $30,000. A 200-hp, dual-overhead cam 3. 0-liter v6 1,000) is optional. These base models come well equipped, with air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, an am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary jack, rear window defroster, cruise control, privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels. the v6 comes standard in the mariner premium 23,820) and premium 4wd 25,570). The leather trim package adds leather seating and adjustable lumbar support to the base model 995) or hybrid 695). the audiophile and navigation package 2,295, base, $1,995 premium and hybrid) includes the stereo upgrade and a touch-screen navigation system. In the hybrid, it also adds a meter that graphically and immediately demonstrates the benefits of hybrid drive, and helps the driver maximize fuel economy. These are only the start of the packages, and there are also a host of stand-alone options for all trim levels, including cd changer 295), a power moonroof 795), floor mats 75), 17-inch wheels 650), and a class ii towing package 395). safety features have been upgraded substantially for 2008, making equipment that was previously optional standard across the board, and raising the benchmark for small sport-utilities. Passive safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants, and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. Rsc adds a second gyroscopic roll-rate sensor to the typical stability control package, measuring the mariner's roll angle and roll rate and applying countermeasures (such as braking one of the wheels or reducing power) to increase rollover resistance. walkaroundthe 2008 mercury mariner has been substantially restyled, but it may be what isn't obvious to the eye that matters more. The most important changes could be functional rather than aesthetic. the outside mirrors, for example, are larger than before, offering a broader view to the sides and rear. Yet mercury engineers tailored the shape so the bigger mirrors generate less noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds. In all, it's part of the overall refinement that makes the redesigned mariner a more pleasant place to spend time. we're not trying to minimize the changes to mariner's styling, because they're significant. The front end, liftgate, headlights and taillights are different. The beltline, or that crease just below the side windows, has been raised, and none of the major body panels are common to previous mariners. It's just that the redesign is evolutionary, with the most obvious changes in the details. In a general, impressionistic way, the new mariner still looks a lot like a shrunken version of the larger mercury mountaineer suv. And while it may have a sedan-style unitbody with fully independent suspension underneath, the mariner has a more conventional, upright, truck-style look than a lot of its competitors. it starts with the big, bold, waterfall grille, which immediately attracts the eye from any angle on the front of the vehicle. The new grille is larger than before, with wider openings between the bars. The badge in the middle is larger, too, and there are smaller mercury badges integrated inside the headlight lenses. There's more brightwork on this mariner front and rear, but it's mostly a satiny, aluminum finish rather than conventional chrome. It gives mariner a more understated, slightly more upscale look than the closely related ford escape. that higher beltline creates the impression that the windows are shorter or narrower, promoting a pillbox effect that emphasizes mariner's truck look. The taillights have the same eyebrow shape as the headlights, which helps connect front and rear. The lenses are clear, with read and white clusters underneath. we particularly like a couple of features in back of the mariner. A step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping smaller items like a gym bag into the cargo area is easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthe 2008 mercury mariner features a redesigned cabin, and it contributes considerably to its overall refinement, increasing its appeal. This interior isn't a great leap forward in any particular fashion, but it's carefully thought out and well executed. Ergonomic function is best in class, and the visual impact is good. the brushed, satiny aluminum trim that abounds outside the mariner carries over inside, and anyone who likes the effect should find the mariner a pleasant place to spend time. The look and feel of materials are improved throughout. The most impressive feature may be the woven-look, rubberized trim on the dash and console. It looks sporty and suited to a mor.
