Among them: the ford taurus, chrysler 300, dodge charger, as well as the honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima. we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh, and it is, having been sharpened when the impala was last redesigned for 2006. Other people think so: the impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the u. S. this is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big trunk lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items. on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a unique grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe 2008 impala has a lot going for it inside as well. Like the exterior, the cabin was completely redesigned for 2006, and has remained comfortably the same since then. the standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive. Lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala ls, lt and ltz models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim a no-cost option on lt and ltz. The ss comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average. the dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base ls model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff. for 2008, a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with generation 7. 0 onstar. The base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Those same historians will also render a verdict whether either decision was a good one. Right now we're might be too close to these events to tell, but we're thinking the styling changes to the 2007 nissan maxima are a good thing. And we still like to think of pluto as a planet. In fact, all of the body work has been restyled. The 2007 maxima gets new headlamps, new taillamps, and redesigned fenders, rocker panels, rear spoiler, and hood. The cabin gets a new instrument cluster and center dash for 2007, making for easier, more intuitive operation. underneath, a continuously variable transmission, or cvt, replaces the more traditional five-speed automatic for smoother, more efficient operation. Nissan excels in this technology and we found the maxima's transmission responsive. the nissan maxima fills a niche for aficionados who appreciate something different. The maxima is more focused on personal luxury and performance. Either way, cruising on the highway is effortless with nissan's wonderful 255-hp v6 engine. For 2007, both the maxima se and sl come standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission, which translates to smooth, efficient power. Gone is the available six-speed manual, which is fine because we didn't care for it. both the maxima sl and se models abound with luxury features. The re-styled 2007 cabin is innovative and comfortable with supportive, luxurious seats. Surviving the 2007 revision is maxima's daring skyview roof, a narrow glass panel running lengthwise over the front and rear seats. It's the sort of feature associated with futuristic concept cars. Also interesting are the available rear bucket seats, a feature seen primarily on show cars or as an option on high-end luxury models. together, the rear bucket seats and skyview roof make back-seat riders feel more like first-class passengers and less like coach-class cattle. The only transmission available is a continuously variable automatic (cvt). The se also comes with a sports suspension, traction control, and 18-inch wheels and tires. the sl 30,300) upgrades with leather upholstery, woodgrain interior trim, heated seats, xenon hid headlamps, a premium eight-speaker bose stereo, and other conveniences that are optional on the se. The sl rides on a softer suspension with 17-inch wheels and tires. the skyview roof comes standard on both se and sl. The se driver preferred package 3,750) combines the sensory package with the contents of the sl driver preferred package described above. the elite package, available for both the se 4,700) and sl 1,950), replaces the rear bench seat with two heated bucket seats and a center console extending the full length of the interior. This option includes everything from the driver preferred packages, plus a power rear sunshade with front and rear controls, auto up/down rear windows, and an extra rear 12-volt power outlet. Options for se and sl include a dvd navigation system with seven-inch color lcd display 1,800); xm or sirius satellite radio 350); vehicle dynamic control 600), and a bluetooth hands-free phone system 300). safety features that come standard include the advanced air bag system with dual-stage front supplemental air bags, front-seat side-impact air bags for chest protection, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection; front-seat active head restraints; and front seat belts with adjustable upper anchors, pretensioners and load limiters. A sophisticated traction control system and a tire-pressure monitor come standard. An electronic stability program called vdc (vehicle dynamic control) is optional. walkaroundthe nissan maxima has been re-styled, and cast in a slightly more conservative mold. the change is most apparent up front. The new grille is shaped similarly to the old one (and to the altima's). But the former, '58 buick-inspired texture of individual chromed studs has been replace by three horizontal, charcoal-colored slats; and the bold, dark-chrome center medallion has evolved into a simple central bulge. The full-width lower bumper opening that formerly stretched from foglight to foglight has been replaced with three smaller, albeit taller, openings. The hood and headlights are new, too, and also a bit more conventional in appearance than before, although the new headlights now incorporate built-in cornering lights. the remainder of maxima's exterior is less radically changed. Big, round fender openings still pay homage to enormous alloy wheels; although the side sills are now more aggressive, and the wheel lips themselves less flattened and chiseled. Both the 17 and 18-inch wheels are now seven-spoke designs. The rear roof still slopes into the trunk lid, flanked by buttress-like sail panels. Large triangular taillight clusters, like the headlights, wrap around to the sides of the car. Nissan says the new design is more intuitive, enhancing the 'human machine interface.' the first thing we noticed is that the new center stack looks more friendly, less hard-edged than the old one. In models without the navigation system, a dot-matrix screen displays hvac, audio and trip computer functions in one central location. With navigation, this is replaced by a seven-inch lcd screen. simulated leather door panels replace fabric surfaces on models with leather-appointed seats, and integrated chromed accents have been added to the transmission shift lever plate and door panels. Brushed aluminum trim accents the se, while a new wood tone trim appears in the sl. the seats in the sl look nice and feel firm yet pillowy, supportive and luxurious at the same time. They were already great last year, and now nissan has added more shoulder bolstering. The sliding center armrest has also been redesigned to improve comfort and convenience. in front of the driver are three small gauges set in their own pod, like those on a motorcycle, with updated graphics for 2007 that are easier to read. The skyview window does not open, but nissan says it found a lot of people rarely open their sunroofs. Satellite radio can be great companion on long trips, delivering cd-quality sound nearly everywhere. Not having to change stations on a cross-country trip. Ford, toyota and nissan launched all-new models for the 2004 model year and gm and honda are introducing all-new models for 2005. To counter this, chrysler has added more than a dozen new features to its town & country models, including an innovative new seating setup. And the price of entry has been dropped with the addition of two value-priced models. chrysler's new second- and third-row seats fold perfectly flat, flush with the floor, revealing more than 160 cubic feet of cargo space. That's substantially more than what's available in any sport-utility vehicle, including the behemoth chevy suburban. The town & country's seats are quickly and easily folded flat without having to remove the headrests. To accommodate the new seating system, chrysler's engineers redesigned the town & country's underbody and designed a new fuel tank, exhaust system, parking brake cables, and rear climate control lines, and modified the rear suspension. when the seats are in place, they provide comfortable perches for up to seven passengers. Storage bins and cargo nets assist with carrying groceries. The luxurious limited model comes with leather upholstery, upscale appointments, and dual power sliding doors and a power rear liftgate. Gps navigation, dvd entertainment, hands-free communication and other features are available for increased convenience. Two v6 engines are available: a 3. 3-liter v6 comes on base and lx models and produces 180 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. It comes equipped with air conditioning, power windows, tilt steering column, remote keyless entry, am/fm/cassette, and dual sliding doors. Standard upholstery is cloth. The new stow 'n go seats are not included, however, and the second row is a bench seat. Anti-lock brakes are optional; rear drum brakes are standard. the lx 24,770) is a base model built on the same long wheelbase used by the rest of the models. Subtle styling changes freshen the looks for 2005. New dual headlamps and a new front fascia includes a better integrated license plate frame and new circular fog lamps. And a new rear fascia includes chromed inserts for the rear park-assist system. the chrysler town & country looks aerodynamic in profile, with its raked windshield, rising roofline and beltline, and fast d-pillars framing canted rear windows. Pronounced wheel arches complement sharp character lines that flank the integrated grille. Rear-end styling tends to make town & country look wider and not as tall as it really is. Huge taillamps feature clear red lenses and jewel-like reflectors. All but the base model are built on a long wheelbase. power sliding doors on both sides add convenience when moving passengers. Press the button on the remote transmitter twice and the door slides open; press it twice again and it slides closed and seals. From the second-row seat, the power sliding door can be opened and closed by pressing a button; it can also be opened manually. A safety lock switch hidden on the trailing edge of the door can be engaged to prevent a child from opening the sliding door from inside. The power sliding doors can be fussy when passengers are in a hurry to get out, however, and they usually are. Pulling on the outside lever opens the power door manually, with just slightly more effort than opening a regular manual door. some models come with manually operated sliding doors, which are easy to operate, smoothly sliding open and closed with the pull of a nicely designed lever. The outside door handles are comfortable, easy to operate and well designed; they impart a feeling of quality in appearance and operation. All door handles should be this good, but they aren't. a power rear liftgate is available that adds convenience when picking up groceries or supplies. Press a button on the remote control and the liftgate opens or closes automatically. It provides seating for up to seven people, and all positions, including the third row, are roomy and comfortable. That's something that can't be said for any sport-utility vehicle. Cup holders are available at each seat, and the rearmost passengers each get their own storage console, though the plastic lid is flimsy. The material is soft and appears to be durable. Attractive sycamore wood and satin-silver trim warmed the cabin. chrysler's new stow 'n go seating system is the best on the market. The second and third rows of seats fold flat into the floor leaving a perfectly flat platform for cargo. Folding and unfolding the seats is a quick three-step process. Pull one strap to drop the seatback, then pull two other straps to tuck it into the floor. This leaves a perfectly flat platform. Very few seats fold perfectly flat and no one else (except dodge) has a second row that does this. The system is also flexible. The third row is split and either or both of the second-row captain's chairs can be stowed. Once back there, she said the seating was very comfortable. She then put on her headphones and that was the last we heard from her. the low floor makes getting in and out through the side doors easy. Caesar the 160-pound mastiff requires a ramp to get into an suv, but he stepped easily and without hesitation through the rear and side doors of the town & country without such assistance. The low load height also makes loading cargo easier, and the town & country can carry more stuff and bigger items than any suv. There's a fair amount of cargo space behind the third row. When the seats are in place for passengers, there are wells behind the third-row seats that are perfect for groceries. These se-r models have suspension modifications for sharper handling.
